After a nice little break of two weeks, we’re back with another focus on the community. With so much talk of Mara going to witness Crowe’s struggles with his own nightmare in Haunted Season, this particular community focus comes at a fun time. When I saw Mara from this masquerade player for the first time, my jaw dropped to the ground. From the beautiful craftsmanship of the costume itself to the incredibly expert makeup that gave her that coveted Awoken look, everything about her Destiny 2 cosplay journey has intrigued me. We hope our community feels the same!
Meet Adrienne Fiore, a US cosplay player who almost makes me feel bad for my anger at Mara and her cunning manipulations. Whether you love her or hate her, she’s a boss, and Adrienne has totally captured the essence of this character in a way we’re excited to share.
So, without further ado, let’s get into it.
Adrian, you are welcome! So excited to chat with you and show off some of your cool projects to our community. Before we get started, go ahead and tell us a little bit about yourself!
I’m Adrian! I’m cool, but I’d be even better if I was playing Destiny now! [laughs] I’m a single mom with a nine-year-old son (who loves the game too!). I also work full time as a manager at Outback Steakhouse, so sometimes I can’t play as much as I want to. I started playing again with my first NES (hush, I’m not old I swear) and from there, I was hooked. Over the years I’ve owned every game console and played thousands of titles, but it wasn’t until Destiny 1 came out that I finally found a game I could stick with. Over the years, I’ve made new friends and gained existing ones to play Destiny with me, and it’s honestly been great, especially with how much games like this have evolved over time.
I agree! Live service games are great in many ways, especially for players who want to feel connected to a world without that world becoming outdated. We’ve linked via a post you made with your Mara Sov cosplay on a cool Facebook page called The Ladies of Destiny. Honestly, I was impressed by how your Mara’s expressions turned out. I have to ask, when did you get started in cosplay, and what motivated you to pursue it?
In fact, I dressed Mara for the first time in 2016 at MegaCon! Over the years, I’ve had many other characters that I’ve worn, but I’ve always wanted to bring back Mara and improve it as a way to test myself and see how my skills have evolved. Because of that, I’ve been slowly modifying the entire outfit over the years. Although my first costume wasn’t a game, it was Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen (not talking about season 8). One of my girlfriends is very cunning so she helped me get started and since she is such a good friend she always helps me with any new project I have on my mind. I got into cosplay for a very simple reason: I love to look badass! [laughs]
Is there a cosplay dream you’d like to do someday, no limits? It asks me because I can’t even sew to fix a button despite many efforts to learn, so this whole process is magical to me!
Honestly, my dream outfit would be the Sephiroth outfit for Final Fantasy and the new Mara Sov! Ever since it came out in Destiny 1 and we have The Queen’s Embassy, I’ve been obsessed with all things Awoken and Mara Sov. In the first Destiny game, I had a full set of Queen gear and rocked the cloak throughout the game. no regret. [laughs]
Hey, the dedication is impressive! Plus, you’ve brought ‘ol Sephi from Final Fantasy. This is an instant win.
Speaking of victories and the good of fate, inquiring minds want to know: What subcategory is your main stress when you’re in the game? Are you a “build perfect at all times” or “anything goes” type player?
I’ve been a master hunter since day one (RIP Cayde), although lately I’ve been focusing on building Stasis. I know, I know, “slack hunters, angry voices,” but it works. For weapons, my go-to gear is Gjallarhorn, Suros Regime, Wish Ender and Telesto. I also have a soft spot for Halloween extras. I still rocked the witch’s broom sparrow two years ago. What can I say, I am loyal.
I’ve been plagued forever by being surrounded by hunter tubes, the struggle is real. [laughs] Just kidding, I love that you love the class so much that you’ve experienced it evolving over the years, I think there’s something really special about it.
Since you’re a creative person by nature, I’m eager to know where you’d like to see the Destiny 2 storyline from here?
Characters I was going to say because of my disguise, but I like Awoken so much, I want more of the story around them! City of Dreams is my happy place, so anything related to that is amazing!
Although I really miss Cade 6 and wish there was some way to bring it back, I love the Crewe’s evolution and have been enjoying seeing more about it. Despite that, I just want to see him feel some happiness. It’s not Uldren, it deserves a fresh start.
I feel like I’m the city of dreams and your wish for Kaede’s return could have a lot of potential for theories. We’ve seen some savages from the community about him and Awoken! I’m very guilty of that too, even though I work here. Want to trade game theories about what might be on the horizon?
There is not much about wild theory details, but I think it would be really nice to have a mission here or there where we can play as a non-playable character. Like Variks, or maybe even Exo Stranger. It would be great to see different perspectives of this world, even if for short periods of time through a side mission or something.
Debs on being a servant so I can roll like a big ball all day and do nothing yet I still wreak havoc. Another favorite question I like to ask, especially to cosplayers because of the way your brain sees elements and how they translate to the real world: If you could come up with a subcategory of your dreams, what would it be? Anything goes, be weird if you want to.
Hmmm. I think if I could subclass it it would be a kind of “do it yourself” (DIY). A subcategory where you can combine items from all categories (within reason), so I can pick and choose what I like from each while still making them my own. I mean, just imagine having a Blade Barrage and Stasis battle to freeze?! How cool might that be?
Also, not related, but please give me a character Mara will buy.
Mara will subclass, Roger it! Given your connection to the conference scene, is there anything you’d like to say to the Destiny 2 communities and games in general?
Just enjoy. Do what makes you happy! I feel a lot of grief over the smallest things, like playing Destiny or investing in costumes, but nothing has stopped me. It shouldn’t stop you either! Let people be happy and only be kind. Also, if you want to do Destiny cosplay, or just cosplay in general? Do it! I don’t see that enough and would love to see more cosplayers take on characters from Destiny 2.
Nice to talk to you, thank you for taking the time to chat about your love for Mara and your dedication to Hunter. It was honestly a blast! Before we let you go so you can take control of some Sever action, is there anyone you’d like to shout out to? Don’t forget to tell people where they can find you to continue your costumed journey!
I owe all my experience raiding and dungeons to KobnarCan on Xbox! He always makes a place for me whenever I finally have time to play. This means everything to me.
For anyone interested, you can follow me on Instagram! I’m also posting my Unfate disguise, progression screenshots, and more!
This is a summary of another community focus and another inspiring member of the community. It’s always a good time when we get a chance to sit down with other players and get into their heads a little and see the game world through their eyes. Adrienne was no exception, especially with the loyalty to her favorite characters. As a Raven fan, I understand these feelings and know that some of you all do, too.
You are all so inspiring and I hope that even when times are tough, when everything gets a little dark, you remember that you matter. You are special, you are loved, and you are so appreciated. So don’t be afraid of this light, keep shining. We’ll be here to watch you take over the world.
“I have to go,”
